Vientiane to Hanoi: Sleeper Bus, Flight, or via Vinh

The sleeper bus takes 22 to 24 hours and a flight just over an hour. Nam Phao issues no visa on arrival in either direction: arrange visas first.

  • 2 daily flights, approx 1 h 10 m
  • Nam Phao – Cầu Treo
  • No Lao VOA at this crossing

What is the best way from Vientiane to Hanoi?

For one overnight ticket, take the sleeper bus from Vientiane's Southern Terminal (Dong Dok). Fly if saving a day matters more than the fare. Stopping in Vinh splits the trip into two shorter rides. By road you cross at Nam Phao – Cầu Treo, which issues no visa on arrival, so sort your visa before you reach the border.

The direct sleeper bus

Daily sleeper coaches leave Vientiane's Southern Terminal (Dong Dok) in the late afternoon and reach Hanoi about 22 to 24 hours later, around 760 km by road. Operators include HTX Van Tai and The Sinh Tourist.

The coach is a VIP sleeper with two-tier bunks, one berth, an aisle, then two berths across each row. Ask for a lower single berth: you can sit upright in it by day instead of lying flat for the whole run.

Fares and departure times move; current online listings run from about the price of a budget domestic sleeper up to about USD40, depending on the operator and how early you book.

Flying between Vientiane and Hanoi instead

Two daily flights, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, run by Lao Airlines and Vietnam Airlines, take about 1 hour 10 minutes, from around VND 4,957k one way. Check both carriers, because they do not always price the same departure the same way.

There is also a connecting option via Luang Prabang for travellers already in northern Laos: a short hop to Luang Prabang, then its own flight on to Hanoi. It usually costs more than the direct flight and only makes sense when no direct seat is left.

The slower way: splitting the trip via Vinh

Splitting at Vinh, on Vietnam's north-central coast, turns one 24-hour ride into two shorter legs over the same Nam Phao crossing; it is not faster overall. Vientiane to Vinh takes about 14 hours and is not sold online at the moment: buy it at the Southern Terminal.

From Vinh, Hanoi is roughly 6 to 7 hours more by train or bus, the same day or, more comfortably, after a night in Vinh. You also see a stop that most people travelling straight through never do.

Not sold online at the moment: no bookable seats on any of seven dates checked between 30 September and 4 November 2026, in either direction. A daily sleeper still appears on the published timetable, leaving Vientiane at 06:00 and taking about 14 hours; ask at Vientiane's Southern Bus Terminal (Dong Dok).

The crossing: Nam Phao – Cầu Treo

Every option on this page crosses at Nam Phao – Cầu Treo, over the Keo Nua Pass: the main road link on the Laos–Vietnam border. Unlike the Thai Friendship Bridges, buses drive straight through, with no separate paid shuttle leg.

Neither visa is issued here

Nam Phao does not issue a Vietnamese visa on arrival, and it does not issue a Lao visa on arrival either, unlike Dansavanh further south, the one Laos–Vietnam crossing that does.

Sort your paperwork before you leave: a Vietnam e-visa if you are not on the 45-day exemption list, and a Lao visa in advance if you are entering Laos this way from Vietnam. See Laos to Vietnam crossings for the full nine-checkpoint picture and the exemption list.
