How many border checkpoints does Laos have?
The Lao Department of Immigration's own register lists 33 named checkpoints: four international airports, and 29 land or rail crossings. Eighteen are covered in full detail on this site's border and train pages; all but two of them, Nam Soy–Na Mèo and Dak Ta Ock–Nam Giang on the Vietnam border, carry scheduled passenger transport. The other fifteen are the four airports, Khamsavath station and ten quiet land posts that hardly any bus uses; they are in the table so you can look up a name you have come across.

The register: all 18 international crossings
Every land and rail checkpoint on the register that carries passenger traffic, with the official name as the register spells it, what travellers usually call it, and the operational facts. Hours and visa status are as last checked 14 October 2026. Where field reports have contradicted the official listing, the crossing's own border page says so.

Two patterns are worth reading off this table rather than hunting for. The Friendship Bridges all run 06:00–22:00 and bridges 1 to 4 require a paid shuttle between the immigration buildings: you cannot walk or cycle across them. And in the visa columns, the Vietnam block is almost entirely "No", which is the single most consequential fact on this page for anyone travelling west into Laos.
Each row's Verified date is the day we last checked that particular crossing against the official register, and it links straight to the crossing's own page there. Most dates match, since we usually go through the whole list together; if only part of the register needed a second look that week, a crossing can sit a few days behind the rest.

The other 15: airports, a rail station and quiet posts
Two of these carry real, regular traffic: the four airports have scheduled international flights (covered in detail on Flights to Laos), and Khamsavath is the Vientiane terminus of the train from Nong Khai and Bangkok, covered on the Vientiane page and Vientiane to Bangkok.
The remaining ten land checkpoints, by contrast, carry little or no scheduled passenger transport. Names are exactly as the official register spells them, since a search for the local name sometimes turns up nothing while the official spelling does.
