## The crossing: 1st Friendship Bridge

The busiest Laos–Thailand crossing by a wide margin, and the standard route for this journey either way. As with every Friendship Bridge, walking and cycling are banned: cross by the mandatory paid shuttle bus, or by train: the railway crosses the same bridge, and trains now run from Nong Khai to Vientiane's **Khamsavath** station, about 7 km from the centre, including a direct overnight sleeper from Bangkok (below). ## The direct sleeper bus

Direct services, including one long-running operator, Naga Travel, run an overnight VIP sleeper from Vientiane to Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal, about **20 to 24 hours**. It is the simplest single-ticket option, and the one to take if a border change and a second booking is more hassle than it is worth for the saving.

## The direct sleeper train, Bangkok to Vientiane

Since July 2024 there has been a through train, no change at Nong Khai: **train 133** leaves Bangkok's **Krung Thep Aphiwat** at **21:25** and reaches Vientiane's **Khamsavath** station at **09:05**; **train 134** leaves Khamsavath at **09:35** and arrives in Bangkok at **07:20** the next morning. Second-class sleeper berths cost **784 baht upper, 874 baht lower**; a second-class seat is 574 baht and third class 281 baht.

Northbound, everyone gets off at Nong Khai for Thai exit checks on the platform, then Lao entry formalities happen at Khamsavath, which is an official checkpoint issuing visa on arrival and accepting the eVisa. Southbound, Lao exit checks happen at Khamsavath before boarding. Khamsavath is about 7 km from central Vientiane and is **not** the Laos–China Railway station, which is a separate station 14 to 15 km out. Tickets are sold on the State Railway of Thailand's own D-Ticket site; fares are the last published figures and worth re-checking there.

## Splitting the trip at Nong Khai: usually cheaper

International buses cross the border to **Nong Khai** in about an hour, several times a day; some travellers instead take the short cross-border train between Vientiane's Khamsavath station and Nong Khai. From Nong Khai, Thailand's own network takes over completely, and this is where most of the saving against a direct ticket comes from.

### By Thai sleeper train

Thailand's long-distance sleeper trains now run from **Krung Thep Aphiwat**, Bangkok's newer central terminal at Bang Sue, not the old Hua Lamphong station many older guides still name. The main overnight service on this line currently departs Bangkok around **20:25** and reaches **Nong Khai around 06:25**, roughly **10 hours**, in modern air-conditioned sleeper carriages. Based on the last published fare schedule, expect somewhere around **900 to 1,550 baht** depending on berth class (upper berths cheaper than lower, second class cheaper than first); treat that as an indicative range rather than today's exact fare, since Thai rail fares move and this site has not re-priced every class this pass. A daytime express with air-conditioned seats only, no sleeper, also runs the same line in about 8 to 9 hours, for travellers who would rather not lose a night either way.

### By Thai bus

An ordinary Thai intercity coach from Nong Khai to Bangkok is the cheapest single option of all, run frequently throughout the day and evening by Thailand's domestic operators, though slower and less comfortable overnight than the sleeper train.

Take the **direct bus** for one ticket and no thinking. Split at **Nong Khai** for the lower total price, and take the **sleeper train** onward rather than a Thai bus if you want the overnight leg to actually feel like rest.

Covers the same route in about **1 hour 15 to 20 minutes**, from around **THB 4,289**. Worth comparing properly on a journey this long overland rather than assuming the bus is automatically cheaper: budget carriers with flexible dates sometimes price close to a direct sleeper once an overnight hotel is factored in.

## The Udon Thani alternative

A separate direct corridor runs via **Udon Thani** rather than Nong Khai, about 3 hours from Vientiane. It is not a shortcut to Bangkok by road, but Udon Thani's own airport often prices regional Thai flights lower than flying via Bangkok directly, and since 9 September 2026 a dedicated bus also runs straight from Udon Thani Airport to Vientiane.
