Laos's domestic network runs on a handful of corridors with Vientiane as the hub. On the northern corridor, Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, the Laos–China Railway is now dramatically faster than the bus. The bus still wins on price and on routes the railway does not serve, notably Vientiane to Pakse in the south, which is an overnight sleeper.

## Common questions

### What is the difference between VIP, sleeper and minivan?

VIP means a seated coach with air conditioning and reclining seats, used on day routes. Sleeper means flat or near-flat bunks for overnight hauls. Minivan is smaller and quicker point to point. Be warned that "VIP" is used loosely, on long overnight routes it often just means a bed bus with no reclining seats at all.

### Will I share a bed on the sleeper to Pakse?

Often, yes. Sleeper buses on this route commonly put two passengers per bunk, paired by gender if you are travelling solo. Some operators offer a single bunk, ask when booking, it is not always available.

### Is overnight bus travel safe for solo women?

Generally regarded as safe on the main tourist routes, which run full of other travellers most nights, and same-gender bunk pairing is standard. Normal precautions apply: keep valuables on you, know your drop-off point in advance.

### Should I take the train instead?

On the northern corridor, usually yes, Vientiane to Luang Prabang is under two hours by rail against about ten by road. See Laos train tickets. The bus still wins on price and for Vientiane to Pakse, which the railway does not serve.

### How far ahead should I book?

Popular routes in high season, roughly November to February, can sell out a day or two ahead, especially sleepers on Vientiane–Pakse. Around Pi Mai in mid-April, book several days out.
